Dry Skin In Ear Canals

Possible canine ear mites?

We have an old German Shorthaired Pointer, who's about 16. She's recently gotten some white flaky, scaly stuff right inside her ear, in a patch about the size of a quarter. It doesn't seem to hurt her , and her ear's don't smell and are cleaned regularly. As it's not inside the ear canal (just on the Pinna). Could it just be dry skin, or can mites live outside the ear canal?

That isn't mites. They are dark crumby like old coffee grounds & smell. Her ears sound like old wax peeling off or could be old skin coming off. At her age things don't work as well as they used to & this includes skin, oil glands & ear wax. I wouldn't be worried but definitely checking with a vet can't hurt.
